Two watches I was watching for over a week on Yahoo Japan Auctions.
The Seiko 6306 diver's watch (below) was sold by its original owner. He said he didn't wear it much after he bought it new back in the mid-70's, and for the past seven or so years he's only taken it out of a drawer once a year and shook it to get it running.
Apparently a lot of Japanese collectors wanted this watch, from all the interest shown. One good thing about YJA is all the emails sent to the seller, with his replies, can be viewed publicly. One of the emails was from a guy trying to get the auction stopped early. He said he wanted a 6306 when he was a high school student, but of course couldn't afford one at that time.
This watch sold for $525.
The other watch is also a 150m Seiko diver's watch, but this one is a quartz version from the 1980's. It is the exact same size as a 6309 non-cushion case (same screw down crown system -- the best one Seiko ever made in my opinion). It is also the same size as the current 7S26-0020 diver (SKX007).
This is one I wanted myself. The only flaw is a small scratch on the crystal at 3 o'clock. Since this one had no bidders until the last hour of the auction, I had my hopes up all week. But, with one hour to go a lot of experienced guys swooped in and the game was on.
I set my limit at about $130, since it would need a new crystal, gaskets (and I'd have the battery changed) upon arrival -- and since I'd not seen it in person so didn't really know how nice it was, for example the bezel action or more importantly the feel of the crown.
This one sold for about $150 (not two bills, sorry Rob).
I probably should have bid more for this one, but I'm pretty happy with my similar 7S26-0020, and 7002-7000 diver watches right now and I'm just enjoying them.
Thought you might like to see what the final prices on these were. With YJA, unless you are a registered member (which means paying a monthly fee of about $17), you cannot access the auction to see what the final winning bid was after it closes.
