Ah ... here's the rub, John. I live in Japan, so I got mine for 40% off retail at a department store's "going out of business" sale.
Actually, Mr. Higuchi's price of $417 (50,000) is very good. That's because it includes shipping cost. If it also includes tax, his price is more than 20% off.
If I buy one in most stores in Japan (if I can find one, that is, they're really in demand), I can get it for 20% off, or 48,000 yen. But, with 5% sales tax, total is 50,400 yen. Mr. Higuchi beats that AND includes shipping!
Only one very special store named "Big Camara" sells these for 30% off.
But, if I were to buy one for you, pay sales tax, shipping, and round trip train fare into the city, your final cost would be around $410. But you wouldn't have anyone to deal with except Seiko if you did have a problem.
The extra $7 you pay to Mr. Higuchi very well spent insurance money, since he will take care of you if you have a problem.
These watches are well worth $417 that he charges, in my opinion, and you won't be disappointed if you do decide to get one.
Besides Mr. Higuchi, I believe Andy S. mentioned a few other internet sites that do carry these. You may want to ask him for those or check around on the net yourself.
The main point I wanted to make in mentioning that I paid $315 for mine is that the old one was selling for almost the same cost! Can't go wrong buying a new one if it's to your taste.
