Below, Jetan says in his response to "...I Made A Champ 5" that if it says "MOVT Japan" on the dial, it is made (encased) somewhere other than Japan.
I said in my post above that I had seen ones which said "Made in Japan" on the dial but "cased in China" on the caseback. This is wrong.
I've seen them which say "MOVT Japan" on the dial and "China" (or whereever) on the back. If it says "Made in Japan" on the dial and caseback, it certainly is.
HOWEVER, if it doesn't say "Made in Japan" on the dial at 6 o'clock, I do believe it MAY be made in Japan if it says "Japan" on the caseback. A dial variation.
If it has "J" at the end of the model number, I think it is made in Japan. However, not if it says SKX***KJ. "K" means not made in Japan.
For example, a "SKX011J" which doesn't say "Made in Japan" on the dial but does say "Japan" on the caseback is made in Japan, I think.
I'm not sure about ones like Randall sees sometimes, which say nothing on the dial and caseback but have Japan on the movement. I think they could be made in Japan or not.
Same with Seiko 5. It should be a "J" model number.
For example, this scan of a SKZ129"J" Seiko 5 (it also does say "Made in Japan" on the dial, but my point is the model number ends in "J" not "K") is one made in Japan.
A SKZ129K will be made outside of Japan.
Confused? Me too. Well, I think the model number is the key.
