According to the SEIKO engineers who re-introduced the automatic ...
movement back into the Japanese market in 1992, no automatic movement watches were sold in Japan from 1980 thru the early 90's.
If this is correct (they should know what they're talking about), it makes sense if production of automatics such as the 6309, was moved abroad in or around 1980.
Apparently, part of SEIKO's justification for this was their belief cheap automatic movment watches were most appropriate for people in the "Third World" who may not be able to afford to replace batteries in quartz watches! So, they continued to make the SEIKO 5, for instance (and the inexpensive diver's watches), with the thought that it would be run for 20 years without needing servicing.
I remember several Japanese telling me this about automatic watches when I first came to Japan in the early 90's. "Automatic watches are good for people who live Africa."
How times change.
