my 2cents on the divers- and why- plus photos out the yazoo!
ok, you say under 500$, so I going to leave out 300m vintage and new, and 600m vintage and new, and also leave out all quartz, much as I love my h558 and h601.
I'm also only going to count manly sized divers, no 2205 or 4205. I'm also only going to count the real dive lines, so no 70m, regardless of how cool that inner rotation bezel is.
heres my take on the line-
MOST DESIREABLE- the 6217/62MAS/frist model diver-
why, because its their first and you just can't find that many of them. I'm happy with mine, but it sure as heck is not in the shape randal put his in.
is it the best... not by a long shot. the design, water resistance, and durability just don't compare to some of the later offerings. this one is not mine, but just a good look from various aspects to feast your eyes on- (sorry, but my photos suck so just forgive me for snagging some other peoples now and then- any problems please email me in person or post to this- I just want to share seiko with everyone one)
BEST LOOKING- the 6105-8000- yep, the lines on this baby are just sleek and clean- still a "turn and "lock"", not true screw down crown, design almost there- but I must say again, did not believe it until had it in hand on on wrist- this is the sharpest, sweetest looking of the bunch, very sleek and kewl-
I got mine from justin, and he has an even sweeter one for sale at a great price right now, my buddy was going to get it, but he is busy and dragging his feet, so help justin get that Mission Anartica and snag it!
now, in the same category of "second model divers" are the 6105-811x series, the 8119 has a hacking movement, and this is a sweet watch, I liked it better than the 8110 until I had one. you can see the birth of the 6309-704x case in this model.
BEST EVER- 6309-704x - well mabye not, but this is where the cushion cased peaked in design, the screw down (true) became standard, and a generation or two of special ops guys have proven their durability and practicality. this gives day and date, a bulletproof 6309 movement (unless you lucked out and got a japan only 6306-7001 21j instead of 17j). this watch will forever hold a place in my heart and many others as a bomb proof ledgend.
here is one flanked by a 6105-8119 and a skx171k/5s26-7020 for comparison.
here is the back of one-
BEST TRANSITION- the 6309-729x- yep, this is the short lived piece, keeping the great 6309 movement, but heralding the transition to the 7002 case, which is very similar to the modern 007/skx173 line. I do not see alot of these compared to the 704x series (but more often than the 6306!)
Randall, forgive me, but mine is very unphotogenic compared to yours and you all know my limited photo skills, so I borrowed the photo of the one you sold last week- please email my personally if this bothers you and I promise never to do so again.
MOST UNDER RATED- the 7002 Series
yep, these rectangle indiced, date only and, at least for the first models, poor glowing wathces were a throwback to the 6105 look/function somewhat, but with a slimfasted case like the 7290. I for one only got one becasue I could not find a 6309 to replace the one I lost. 12 years later and lots of abuse it laughed off, it is as kick ass a descendant of the line as any, and specifically the 7002-7039, and possibly other models in the line, gave us the first basic diver series upgrade from 150m to 200m. here is a pepsi bezeled ss oyster 7039-
I would put up a photo of the 7002-7009, but this post has enough photos to download as it is.
BEST BARGAIN- well, when all is said and done you can pick up a 007k for just over a hundred bucks, a 007j for about 130, and an skx173 for just under 150$. tax free 6309 at the PX bargain price in mid 80's were 130$, so my hat is off to seiko for so much watch for so little money. no scans needed for these, if you all don't have one head on over to our dealer friend and pick one up- your grad kids will be giving it to their kids "yep, my grand dad had this one. has'nt been serviced since he died son, but as soon as you put it on, it keeps on running. sure, it's off 5 or 10 minutes a month, but what do you expect from an antique!"
