The 6309 moter swap,THE DONOR, (fairly technical,A few scans)
First,Id like to apologize for the disjointedness of the posts,I thought this would be a more time consuming project, but its going pretty smoothly.
So,on with the story.............
THE DONOR,I call this one "The most abused 6309 ever"
(note: can someone tell my what that day is,is it japanese?)
Take a look at the upper right hand lug!,someone has welded on it and got it to stick(?). This watch was actually running(8^)). The serial number on this watch starts with 77,and the case number is 6306-7001,based on its looks, and the lighting bolt under the 150 on the dial,I`m going to guess that this watch is from 1977. My Minty 6309 case also has a ser.num. that starts with 77. But its cased in Hong Kong,so I`m going to assume its from 1987.(personal note: these dates dont jive with the production dates I`ve heard on this board,so they`er up for speculation)
NOW the good stuff..............
Instead of the more common 6309 cal. prevalent in these cases, this one contained a Cal.6306!!
The autowind bridge on this movement states that this cal. is 21 jewels,as opposed to the 6309`s 17 jewels.
Hmm,four extra jewels, you all know how I like EXTRA jewels. I was to find out where they were while taking the autowind bridge off.
First,A little info on the famed 6309. The 6309 is a 17 jewel movement. For some reason,Seiko chose to BUSH the center seconds pinion, and the third wheel pinion on the train bridge. Personaly I`ve never liked this from a practical horological view.
Now,Heres the train bridge on the 6306...........
The four EXTRA jewels are being used in extremely wise
locations. Instead of the bushing on the forth, and third wheel,we now have jewels. Not only that, but Seiko has added cap jewels to the escape wheel, and third wheel. So that makes for the four extra jewels,2 peirced jewels, and two cap jewels.(Here I must apologize for my limited photoshop skills, but you get the picture)
But the best was yet to come. As we all are awear, the 6309 does`nt hack.(I mean that the second hand does`nt stop when you pull the crown out). Its my personal opinion that a sports watch should hack.
The 6306 has a hacking lever, underneath the train bridge.
Ok,heres how it works:When the crown is pulled out,the set lever pushes the clutch in,which is keyed to the hack lever at the green arrow. The hack lever is forced to the center of the movement, piviting on the sholder at the far left. The extended arm(RED ARROW)then contacts the balance rim, causing it to stop, thereby HACKING the movement. YIPEE!!
So,now the secrets of the 6306 are revieled!
So,here is a closeup of the cap jewels on the train bridge.
Note how the jewels are clear, save for there color. And that the oil drop is centered, and ONLY fills the oil well. THIS is what a properly oiled cap jewel assembly should look like. And,btw, those "diafix" springs are a REAL PITA.
OK,now Ive got to finish the calender plate, and auto bridge, and case it.
It will be next weekend, but I hope to have timing results,as well as the conclusion to my "6309 moter swap" project.
Hope you ejoyed my yet again, overly critical approach to MY personal watches. (this one will be a keeper <8^))
Cheers,Randall
