Randall,
Thanks for taking time to post your project...VERY interesting. I have just purchased a 6309 and love it dearly. It is quite beat up, but mostly just dings and scratches...some owner must have really loved it. The dial is in terrible need of a re-lumination on the markers and hands, and the crystal needs to be replaced. Not sure if I want to a total restoration on it or not. Anyway, the day of the week on your watch is "Doyobi" which means Saturday. Next is Nichiyobi which looks like a box with a horizontal line drawn through it. The others would be difficult to describe.
Doyobi=Sat (Charc for "earth")
Nichiyobi=Sun (Character for "day")
Getsuyobi=Mon (Character for "moon" or "month")
Kaiyobi=Tue (Charc for "fire")
Suiyobi=Wed (Charc for "water")
Mokuyobi=Thur (Charc for "wood")
Kinyobi=Fri (Charc for "gold")
All these symbols originated in China, and the Japanese adopted them centuries ago, we call the Chinese system of writing "kanji". We also use "katakana", and "hiragana" in conjunction with the Chinese "kanji" characters. Yep, three separate writing systems all at once all at once...generally speaking.
