The last 4 digits are the case reference. Obviously, the 729A has a different dial and bezel than the 7040,7049. Those parts are considered "case parts", hence the different number.
What makes sense is that there is no difference between the 7040 and 7049 other than market destination. The 704X reference indicates the same parts for both models. Similarly, the "A" in the 729 series may be "Asia", as I've been told the Roman numeral/English, day/date feature was for that market. Perhaps there is another 729 version, say a 729B somewhere.
Or perhaps I'm wrong. I dunno.
