Sand Question
Jon,
I have a 781 that I have had for a month or so. Let me first tell you that I absolutely love it. It has replaced my Omega Dynamic as my daily wearer. I actually wanted a Seamaster, but I picked up the 781 to "tide me over." This is my first Seiko. I don't (OK, rarely) think about that Seamaster anymore.
Now, to your question about Sand. I surf with my watch at least once/week and I have had no problems at all. I have noticed a slight "build up" between the bezel and the protector - the area you are concerned with. However, I generally notice this during the week. The salt water seems to clear it up a little. When I get home, I just hose my watch off, along with my board and wetsuit, and all is fine.
I would not hesitate to buy this watch - it really is a great buy.
