My 2 $ents worth about you great watch and story Kelly.
I'd have to agree with you in that if you did the complete restoration it would loose something.
Besides it would just look like every other restored one then.
You mentioned a sportscar as a comparison,....Many vintage racecars and sports cars these days are far more desirable if in original, un-restored condition.
If it were mine,.. would go with a complete "Randall type" internal overhaul.
Clean & preserve the original hands, (clear coat maybe ?) Touch-up the lume (mildly) And MAYBE,...install a nice used, but somewhat faded bezel insert.
But certainly not try to make the watch look like new.
