I'd have to agree with you in that if you did the complete restoration it would loose something.
Besides it would just look like every other restored one then. Your watch has "soul"
You mentioned a sportscar as a comparison,....Many vintage racecars and sports cars these days are far more desirable if in original, un-restored condition.
If it were mine,.. would go with a complete "Randall type" internal overhaul.
Clean & preserve the original hands, (clear coat maybe ?) Touch-up the lume (mildly) And MAYBE,...install a nice used, but somewhat faded bezel insert.
The thought is to preserve this watch and it's soul value, But certainly not try to make the watch look like new!
Then wear it for another 20 years with a smile!
