Not a release valve
It is not a release valve and does not work like one at all.
It is "He Proof" significant helium does not enter the watch.
This technology is a defining characteristic of Seiko
professional divers, and an excellent piece of design, so much
more elegant and sophisticated solution than an He release valve.
I think it should be noted the diver in the letter is working at depth's of
350m in 1968 before the invention of any dive computers, so the watch was a piece of
necessary life safety equipment.
Amazing how myths get started, when all it takes it a little
research...
